Kentucky Forts and Parks

We had a good visit with Sonia and her family and now we are venturing through Kentucky.  Our first stop was at a rec area just outside of Fort Knox.  From there we drove down to Mammoth Cave National Park.  Mammoth is the largest cave system with 400 miles of mapped passages.  It was very different from the two caves that we have been to.  The tour route went through much larger passages.

We couldn't use flash so this is what we got of the cave.

The cave was mined for calcium nitrate.

Cave graffiti from the early 1900's.

We went onto post to get groceries at the commissary and to try to get a closer look at the bouillon depository.  We found the commissary just fine, but couldn't find the depository.  The only picture we got was when we drove by on the way to the cave.

Today we spent the day at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington.  Man O War is buried at the park, along with some of his offspring and other horses that have made the racing lime light, such as John Henry and Kona Gold.  There are several retired race horses at the park as well as horses representing the various breeds.  There are also several museums to view.  Today they had the U.S. Dressage Finals going on, so we watched a bit of that.
